A true "Favorite Son" of Everett High School, Joe Richer was beloved by all who were
privileged to know him. His teaching, counseling and coaching career in Everett
spanned 30 years. Joe attended Everett Schools through high school, graduating from
Everett High in 1961. He captained basketball and golf teams, leading both to state
tournaments and gaining a reputation as a leader and competitor. Joe was also a
two-sport letterman and captain of the basketball and golf teams at Western Washington
University where he was named to the All Century Golf Team. He was also named a
2nd Team All-American in golf. After graduating from WWU, Joe taught and coached one
year at Quincy High School before returning to WWU to complete his fifth year
teaching requirement and coach junior varsity basketball. He later received his
masters degree in counseling from Seattle University. In 1968 Joe returned home to
Everett High School as a teacher counselor and coach. He remained at EHS for 30
years, coaching numerous state tournament-qualifying teams in basketball and golf.
In the process, he motivated hundreds of students and athletes to strive for
perfection and to develop character while enjoying competition.
Joe died suddenly in April, 1998. In his honor and memory, the basketball court at
Everett High was named Richer Court and an annual scholarship was established.
